Understanding Astrology

History : People had begun to look at the stars for guidance as long as 8000 B.C. Astrologers were employed by the Assyrians, Babylonians, Egyptians, and Mayans to observe, record and predict the positions of stars and events which were believed to be important for their survival and prosperity. The mathematician Ptolemy wrote the first known text book on astrology while he was working in Egypt between A.D. 150 and 180. The Greeks furthered the spread of astrlogy, introducing it to India and later, to the Arab world. The word planet comes from the Greek Planetes, meaning wanderer ; the word horoscope comes from two Greek words, horos meaning time and skopos meaning observer.

Astrology was considered synonymus with astronomy until the seventeenth century ; then, during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, research into this area of divination declined. Twentieth-cetury research sometimes supports astrological theories and sometimes condemns them. There is, however, continued interest in this method of divination.

Modern Methods : Modern birth charts are similar to the charts used by the Greeks during the first and second centuries A.D. Today , however, astrology is used more to assess character and potential than to predict future events. Analytical psychology is used to predict future events. Analytical psychology is used in addition to ancient mythology for the interpretationof charts.

Equipment : Information provided here will enable you to understand different aspects of the birth chart. Birth charts themselves are best constructed by professional astrologers, asthey require the use of detailed and often very complex astronomical data.

Important Conventions usd in Astrology

The earth is seen to be at the center of the universe.
The Sun and Moon are referred as planets. There are therefore ten astrological planets that appear to move around the Earth.
Each of the ten planets is thought to influence the lives of people on Earth.
How the planets influence us is determined by the signs of the zodiac, of which there are twelve, each based on a constellation of stars.
In order to assess character and determine future events, astrologists construct horoscopes or birth charts, symbolic maps of the sky that reflect the time and place on Earth that a person was born.
symbols are commonly used to represent the planets and signs of the zodiac. These are illustrated in separate chart.

Parts of the Birth Chart : A birth chart consists of a circle ( representing the Earth) surrounded by another, larger circle, that is divided into 12 sections called " houses ". The relative positions of the planets are written inside the house segments ( using symbols ) and the signs of the zodiac appear around the edge of the birth chart ( also as a symbols), always in the same order. A horizontal line runs accross the chart and is called a cusp. This cusp is always in the ascendent position, the position of the Sun as it rose on the eastern horizon on the date of birth. The cusp of a sign or house marks its starting point.Another cusp is included that indiactes the position of the Sun at noon on the date of birth. It is represented by the letters MC, standing for the Latin , medium coeli, meaning midheaven. South is always placed at the top of the chart . This means that the sun-sign for a person born during the day will be in upper half of the chart. If the time of birth is not known, the sun is placed in the midheaven position and the houses omitted. note that the cusps for th first, important and are indicated by double lines.

Finding your Sun Sign

You can find your sun sign by using the chart on the next few pages, providing you have your date of birth. Note, however, that the sun enters and leaves signs on slightly different dates in some years. So if you are born on or near a cusp of a sign, you will need to check a more detailed table of sun sign changes.

Overview of the Planets

One of the components inherentto birth chart reading is the significance and influence of the planets. These are usually listed in a traditional order of importance, starting with the sun, and are considered as they appear in the different zodiac signs and houses.

Planets reflecting the life cycle

A person's essential nature is symbolized by the positions of the Sun, Moon, and ascedant, each of which is related to different aspect of a person's life cycle. the acendant represents the future outlook, the Moon reflects moods to which we have become conditoned in the past, and the Sun represents personality in the present. It is said that the Sun and Moon dominate the chart during the earlier part of life, as the Sun attempts to express itself and come to terms with the Moon's influence. The ascedant symbolises the outlook of a person and influences physical appearance. It is important because it is the leader of the succession of signs and houses around the chart. It shares the same potentials as the Sun, and so the same interpretations apply. It may be in any one of the zodiac signs but is always on the cusp of the firts house.

Personal Planets

The Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, and Mars move quickly through the signs. The Moon remains in a sign for only about two days; Mars may stay in a sign for two months. These planets symbolise individual resources and are regarded as personal planets.

Generation Planets

These are Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto. They represent collective resources and move very slowly. Uranus takes about seven years to move through a sign; Neptune takes about 14 years; Pluto takes 13 - 32 years. They show how people are likely to respond to larger social issue.

Planets : Areas of influence

By locating the position of a planet on a birth chart it is possible to answer "what ?" questions. For example, each planet has an area of influence. In order to determine what moods a person might experience, it is necessary to find the location of the Moon; in order to determine what responsibilities are likely, Saturn must be located; to find out what changes are likely, find Uranus, etc.
