Mercury Retrograde
As the popularity of astrology has grown over recent years, certain phrases have become part of our day-to-day vocabulary. And top of the list of these is "Mercury retrograde" referring to the period, usually of three weeks and two days or so, when Mercury appears to travel backwards through the sky and through our Zodiac.
The most recent of these phases occurred between May 26th and June 19th this year. And because Mercury was at this time making its way through Gemini, one of the signs it governs, it might have seemed to many people that there was even more evidence than usual of irritating little things going wrong in terms of mix-ups in communications, delays and cancellations.
Each year three complete Mercury retrograde cycles usually occur and each cycle is generally recognised as a period during which we all have to be more careful about day-to-day communications, travel and negotiations since Mercury is of course linked to the messenger of the gods and is the planet that governs all forms of communication.
So if Mercury is reversing or moving backwards does it mean that we will all be taking one step forwards and two steps back, ourselves, especially in terms of getting from one place to the other, engaging in worthwhile, productive discussions or completing all manner of written material?
As is so often the case in this type of area, the answer is Yes and No. During a Mercury retrograde phase – or at the approach of one – we should check to see whether it's about to coincide with something of particular importance with regard to letters, e-mails, events, phone-calls, contracts or any form of travel. If so, it's worth making doubly sure that absolutely everything is in place to ensure successful transactions. And although it might seem laborious to check and double-check prices, timetables, agreements and the small print time and again, it can pay off.
Looking ahead, the third and final Mercury retrograde phase of 2008 occurs between the 24th September and 15th October, when Mercury will be making its way through Libra. Broadly speaking, if ever there were a time for us all to be more attentive and nurturing as far as our close relationships and the people we love are concerned, it's during this Mercury retrograde cycle. And of course it's possible to interpret more specifically how those born under each sign might be affected and should try to respond by observing the relationship between each Zodiac sign and retrograde Mercury in Libra.
In 2009 the Mercury retrograde phases are January 11th to February 1st; May 7th to May 31st; and September 7th to September 29th; with another beginning on December 26th and finishing on January 15th 2010.

Master Your Destiny
It is sad to observe certain section of Astrologers to involve in practices which induces fear and fatalism in masses, just for the sake of manipulating them to fulfill their own agendas. It is unfortunate that superstitions have been ruling over the minds of Indians in the name of Astrology. Such a divine science could have been used to explore the deeper potential of human being and show him the path through various difficulties, so that one can live life fully. On the contrary Astrological beliefs have often induced inaction, as people have no courage to live the life and hence all their efforts are geared towards avoiding the crisis in life. As their astrologer told them of the forthcoming difficulties, they gave up their efforts to wait for the better times. However, very often they realized to their own peril that even when the good times arrived, there were hardly any results. Only thing many people seem to achieve through astrology is to remain worried about their forthcoming crisis and hiding in a cocoon to safeguard themselves. But sadly, in this whole process they miss the joy of accomplishing their potential, because of the misuse of astrology by a presenting it as a tool for definitive predictions by certain segment of Astrologers to fulfill their narrow motives.
This has hence become the cause for people of higher awareness to keep away from Astrology, who could have otherwise used it as a wonderful strategic tool to make the right choices in life. If we want to extract the best out of Astrology and live a fulfilled life, we need to understand that Astrology can be used to cultivate awareness and intelligence, and hence transforming the challenges into opportunities. Before we proceed to our subject, it will be helpful to look deeply into destiny and free will and understand what they really mean. Many of us may out rightly reject the concept of destiny as we find it derogatory that our lives are not in our own control and someone called God sitting somewhere may be playing with our lives just for the sake of his own fun. Logical minds find it difficult to accept that we may just be puppets in the hands of destiny and it can make us dance to it’s own tune, even if we don’t wish to. However, many times we face such kind of crisis, which appears to pop up on it’s own without any faults of ours. In the aftermath of such periods, one is forced to accept the role of destiny, when a few of such incidents have taken place.
On the other hand, some of us swear and live in a way that it is destiny which is paramount in the way our lives shape up. Hence we refuse to take any proactive action as we believe that whatever is supposed to happen, will happen. So why make futile efforts. We may tend to backtrack on our action and drop the efforts if astrologers have predicted a difficult times for us and wait for good times to take the things forward. However, such kind of life can not be joyous and fulfilled. In our efforts to avoid the crisis, we shape our attitude in such a way which becomes the cause of agonies, fears, aimlessness, resignations and life becomes a bundle of dissatisfactions. Astology Explained
Astrology is said to be the discipline that teaches us how to create horoscopes and use the positions of celestial bodies, to understand and interpret Human existence on Earth. I often encounter articles and comments questioning whether astrology is a science or trying to prove or disprove astrology in scientific terms. Personally, I don’t see how an analogy between astrology and modern day science can be drawn. Science and astrology are two very different disciplines, based on very different principles. Science follows the principles of experimentation, observation and inference, scientific principles must have theoretical or mathematical proof that must always be consistent. Although astrology has it’s own set of well defined principles, they very different to those of science.
In spite of what many astrologers may claim, astrology is not without limitations and before we can go about proclaiming astrology a science or otherwise, we have to understand what these are. Astrology (Vedic) is believed to be the product of divine inspiration and was imparted to the Hindu sage, ‘Bhrigu’ by the Goddess of wealth, ‘Mahalakshmi’. This knowledge was recorded in ancient sacred texts, of which only remnants still remain. Astrology is not a perfect discipline and is only as good as the astrologer who practices it. His or her proficiency determines how accurate the results turn out to be and depends largely on his or her depth of knowledge, type of experience (nature of the predictions made) and length of experience. It would be still however, be logical to assume that even an astrologer, who is by all accounts well accomplished, could not claim to have complete knowledge of astrology, as his or her knowledge cannot exceed that which is contained in the texts that still exist, as these are incomplete themselves.
As explained on www.PowerFortunes.com, science and astrology are base on diametrically opposite points of view, in that science is still grappling with compelling questions about the Universe, about the creation of the Universe, the possibility of parallel Universes, that infinitesimally small fraction of a second after the Big Bang and the beginning of time.
So what was there before the beginning of time? If the Universe has continued to expand ever since it’s creation, what is it expanding into? Our knowledge is so limited that these questions themselves sound absurd. Vedic astrology on the other hand, comes from a belief system that is based on the principle that an explanation for everything that exists can be found in the Hindu scriptures, or with their help. Many Vedic scholars believe that what scientists are discovering today was known to the sages all along. For instance, the twin Vedic planets, ‘Rahu’ and ‘Ketu’ are unique to Vedic astrology. They are said to be represent a mythical serpent, of which ‘Rahu’ is the head and ‘Ketu’ the tail. These two planets are considered to be malefic and devour other forms of energy like endless pits and eclipse or debilitate the Sun and the Moon. The colour of ‘Rahu’ is black and that of ‘Ketu’ is grey. The similarity between ‘Rahu’ and ‘Ketu’ and black holes is quite striking, the opposite end of a black hole is thought to be a white dwarf. Another case in point and also featured on PowerFortunes.com, is the relevance of the number, ‘108’, which is the number of beads in a Hindu prayer bead rosary. Although these prayer beads are a product of the ancient Vedic period, through modern science, we now know that the figure '108' is of particular relevance, as the distance between the Earth and the Sun is approximately 108 times the Sun's diameter. The Sun's diameter is about 108 times that of the Earth’s and the distance between the Earth and the Moon is approximately 108 times the Moon's diameter. Is it possible that the ancient Hindu sages were able to determine these celestial measurements, with such accuracy, long before telescopes existed?
Admittedly, none of the above proves anything scientifically, but it does question whether science is really advanced enough to explain astrology. In my opinion, in order to explain or debunk astrology, a scientist would have to first understand and be well versed with the principles of astrology and should be able to practice astrology. I feel that he or she would then understand that astrological predictions are not binary in nature, everything is not black and white, as it in science and there are authentic shades of grey.
In addition to being used to make predictions about the future, Vedic astrology also allows for remedial measures, through the use of gemstones, talismans, prayer ceremonies, chanting of Mantras etc.
According to the ancient Vedic scriptures, a parallel universe, complete with planets, stars, constellations etc exists in the human body. Obviously, this Universe does not exist in the same physical form we know through astronomy. However, it’s existence this can be experienced by the awakening of the ‘Kundalini', or 'Sleeping Serpent', a brilliant thread running through the spinal cord, the awakening of which is the highest step in ‘Tantrik’ practices. Vedic astrology recognizes nine planets, twelve zodiacs and 28 constellations. Pandit Sarvesh Nagarvedic, the chief astrologer at PowerFortunes.com explains that the nine Vedic planets have been accorded the status of demigods, however these heavenly bodies are not all powerful and rely on offerings made on Earth for strength. When we on Earth pray to or appease the power representing a planet, by acquiring it’s gemstone or Yantra, we are actually tapping into the power of the planet, present in our own parallel universe. In this way, the planets are easily gratified and respond by bestowing their blessings on their worshippers.
So what does this all this mean? Do the same powers that control our lives by virtue of astrology, exist in the heavens or inside us? “As is above, so is within”, would seem to be the answer. Astrological influences are not far removed objects that work in isolation, they are a part of the Universe that we are also a part of and we have the means to strengthen or appease them, as we desire. This is not to suggest that we can completely alter fate, to do that would mean we have the ability to change the position of the planets in our horoscopes, which is of course, impossible. What we have to remember is that astrology notwithstanding, everybody goes through good times and bad times. The basic principle of astrology is that deeds and actions (karam) are above all. Just like God, astrology helps those, who help themselves, but using our knowledge of astrology, we can change the influences of astrological forces, so we can make more of good times and reduce the negative effects of bad times.
