From the first time that humans looked toward the sky and began to chart the movement of the sun, moon and the planets, men have been assigning meaning to what they saw.
It was not enough to simply record where the sun moved, when an eclipse happened or when a planet was brightest, complex and varying stories and myths were given to each celestial event to help explain things that were happening in the life of the observer.
If crops failed, it was blamed on the stars. If war broke out, it was blamed on the stars. Let us take a look at ten of the heavenly bodies that astrologers assigned meaning to and what each body meant.
1) The Sun
Not only was the sun the easiest body to see in the sky, it provided light, warmth and life. Most cultures saw the sun as a life giver, not vengeful or angry, but almost judgementless. A benign and powerful giver of life and wellness.
2) The Moon

2) Mercury

5) Mars
Maybe no other planet is better known than Mars. Famously known as bringer of war, aggression and terror, it is is well known in most every culture. 8) Uranus
While some astrologers do not even acknowledge Uranus because it was not one of the original seven bodies, to the rest of the astronomers who have accepted it, Uranus stands for ideas and genius. The Importance of Astrology
Various theories have been set up to discover the influences of planets upon the terrestrial phenomena. It is admitted by some people that close relationship does exist between the movement of the celestial bodies in the heaven and the ups and downs of men, renaissance of different empires, changes of human passions and the resurgence of Arts, Sciences and Literature. There are others also who denies the existence of any sort of connection between the stars and the inhabitants of the Earth i.e. we, the human beings!! The reason of their attitude is due to the fact that they do not approach the subject with prejudice free and an unbiased mind. In any field of enquiry, the student will find it useful to remember, it is a major error of the intellect to attempt to oppose the prejudices based on priori arguments to the evidence afforded by the facts.
While the modern scientists acknowledge astrology, some of them sneer at astrology and neglect as well as reject it with contempt. And not only that they also charge it with dogmatism of charlantry and superstition. They preach frankness and research as fair and reasonable; but show the greatest bigotry, when the subject of astrology is taken up or introduced.
Astrology is the science which compromises the foretelling of the regular movement of planets, the fortunes and misfortunes of men, fates of nation, inundations, earthquakes, plagues, volcanic eruptions, pestilences, and other incidents relating to terrestrial phenomena. In Sanskrit it is called Hora Sastra meaning the science of Time. Astrology is also popularly termed as Jyotisha or the Knowledge of Light from Jyoti which is the root-cause of all the creations on earth. According to the Western interpretations, astrology is derived from Aster - a star, and Logos - reason or logic.
No normal and sane human brain can ever deny the strong influence of planets and their movements upon the life of man and how they affect deter and facilitate his fortune and career on the three planes of human existence, viz, physical characteristics, mental peculiarities and spiritual aspirations.
The greatest men of the world believed in and also practiced astrology. Vishnu Bhaskar, in his book named Astrology mentioned - Dante declared it to be 'the highest, the noblest and without defect' form of science. It had also been said that the ancient Hebrews called the astrologer 'Asphe' meaning 'the mouthpiece of the star'. It is said and believed that Newton too, was attracted to the study of mathematics and astronomy by the meditation of an astrological stature of the heavens.
Now, one thing needs to be noted. Astrology must not be confused with fatalism, witchcraft, palmistry and card shuffling or Tarots. It relates only that, what it thinks to be the future of a man as molded by his previous deeds or Karmas and indicated by the planetary positions and the lagnas at the time of his birth. Thus, it invariably follows that all bodies in nature, animate or inanimate, are subject to the motions of the celestial bodies. Not only are those that are already in existence are influenced by the movements and configurations of planets, but also the impregnations and growth and developments of the seeds from which bodies emanate are molded by the quantity and quality of these influences at the time of impregnation.
The Sun, as the central figure predominates over the entire arrangement of celestial system and the other planets and stars are directed by his rays.

Definition of Astrology
Everyone has a hard time justifying astrology as a science due to the wide variations that exist within the world of humans. The definition of astrology is an ancient system of divination using the positions of the planets, moon, and stars. According to astrology the celestial bodies exert specific energies that influence people and events. These influences may be determined by mapping positions in the sky at various times, but is still regarded today as a huge speculative issue due to the deep complexities and misunderstanding associating the field. What if the powers of Astrology had a deeper meaning, which stretched into the spiritual world and the ethereal planes of existence, including the very top-tier planes of power. Astrology is widely interpreted by every human on earth, but only a certain few have a defined ability to understand anything about it. A fair amount of people define astrology as “nonsense” and “childish” through lack of understanding. These are of course the usual human reactions to something we can’t understand.
How are the powers of astrology currently portrayed to the world? Currently, people manifest numbers and equations on planetary alignments, star locations, the apparent divine powers the sun has and also the moon. Their conclusion of what is the horoscope is usually the external scripture you will read. While largely amusing, holds little scientific merit. Astrology needs to be valued more than just this. It is a concept to be considered for all walks of life; it holds bearing to the time continuum of the past, present and future settings on earth.
The human race has existed for a great deal of time now and has since evolved heavily in appearance, behaviour, intelligence, structure, strength, ability, perception and so much more. Some people consider the present to hold the “maximum amount of people time has ever seen” but again we can only speculate about such mysteries told of the highly advanced civilization that apparently walked earth (theosophists define it as Atlantis, the real society and cultural name is unheard) and the age old question of just how long has the world existed? The documented time that has existed shows the definitive lives of several billion people, all born under the same planetary rotation of the earth, which is 365 days or 52.177 weeks. This universal pre-set time fixture of 365 has dated and cycled existence accordingly throughout several millions of years, and in that time has been rotating humans. Currently the study of astrology and namely Astrologists are people who predict the future by the positions of the planets and sun and moon. They do this based on their own interpretation and creativity, which can be as inventive as the person likes. Astrology to some is just a shallow fabric of life to help them feel better by reading what is known as “Powerful wording” written by novelists and professional writers. It is widely under-appreciated the similarities that hold true in the definition of each human’s star sign. In that I mean for every 500 people born in August for example, on the exact same date, hold a very strong connection to each other in terms of their memories, philosophies, beliefs and behaviour. All things which astrology boasts, these are relations not understood by many. It is in that key of understanding and spiritual-thinking that makes people wonder how many humans were born at the exact same moment in time you were, only altering the year. If we were to find that spiritual connection, just how much like that person would we be? If you were to consider sun-sign astrology ONLY, this would be fallible due to the alteration of the physical plane of life, which is earth’s galaxy.
If you were to consider all aspects and relations, the planes of existence, powers to be and the akashic records, these spiritual points all connect to the “collective consciousness” Carl Jung was referring to. The collective consciousness is only Jung’s interpretation and hence a vague reference to the gateways he portrayed. Jung attempted to show the connections between dreams, anthropology and the dualism of life to astrology. His work always showed these links but the people could never grasp the concept of them, given a large amount of humans will only work on what they perceive to be fact-based evidence. The creation of humans defined by scientists is a great example of what can be construed as myth or fact. Physical items “prove” evolution to be the definitive, such as bones and relics discovered at different points in time. We believe this to be the truth because we perceive it based on our senses, which is as far as some people can stretch their mind.

History of Modern Western Astrology
Since the dawn of time when man first looked up at the stars and planets and was awestruck by their beauty people have tried to understand their significance. This is the basic origin of modern astrology and in part of modern astronomy.. The history of astrology reaches back to antiquity and has played a part in many cultures all through out human history. The idea that events in the heavens and the sky have an effect on the affairs of people here on Earth was and among many still is widely believed. Given the importance of the obvious relation between the cycles of the Sun and Moon and the crop seasons here on Earth early man tried to improve his understanding of the movements of the heavenly bodies.
This quest for knowledge led the ancient Babylonians to make a study of the movement of the planets and other celestial bodies and in this capacity they were the first astronomers. The system the early Babylonians developed was based on simple observations and the keeping of simple written records. If a particular event such as the defeat of an enemy army coincided with the rising of a planet it was assumed the rising of the same planet at a later date would signal favorable conditions for battle. If the Moon or a planet rose or set sooner or earlier than predicted it was taken as an ill omen. Little did the Babylonians know these discrepancies were the result of errors in their records due to the lack of precise astronomical instruments such as the telescope which was not invented until many centuries later.
The spread of the Babylonian study of the sky through the middle east and into Europe was accelerated when it was absorbed and expanded upon by the ancient Greeks. The modern word horoscope is derived from the Greek word horoscopes which actually means the ascendant. The most important contribution the Greeks made to astrology is the concept that much can be learned about an individuals future or fortunes by the position of the stars and planets at the time of their birth. This is known as horoscopic astrology and is the basis of the western astrological tradition. Many of the famous ancient Greek mathematicians and philosophers including most notably Ptolemy himself studied astrology which was in a sense the astronomy of their day. Their contributions to modern western astrology also include an exact solar calendar with standardized houses and the twelve sun sign of the zodiac. Just as significantly the Greek astronomer Hipparchus discovered the precession of the equinoxes.
During the middle or dark ages astrology like many other arts and sciences was more or less lost for a time. It was not until the Renaissance that astrology and many other lost works were returned to Europe from Arabia where much of it had first originated. Combined with the advent of more modern scientific astronomical instruments including of course the telescope the Renaissance astrologers were able to chart the stars and planets with greater accuracy then ever before. They included the celebrated Galileo Galilei, Tycho Brahe and Johannes Kepler who not only practiced astrology but laid the foundations of modern astronomy.
The past one hundred years has seen a great rise in interest about astrology and a great demand for horoscopes. The new mass media has provided widespread access to astrology and horoscopes are now published in newspapers, magazines and the internet. The latest astronomical technology has been put to use producing ever more accurate star charts and new planets have even been discovered and incorporated into the astrological techniques. Today astrology is more popular than ever before with about one third of the people saying they believe in it. The effect of astrology on the course of human history is difficult to estimate but astrology is certain to be practiced well into the future.

Astrology Never Lies
ontrary to its detractors concerted opinion, Astrology is not superstition. Superstition is more akin to: "If I break a mirror, I will have 7 years bad luck." or "If a bird flies into my house, someone will die." or "If I step on a sidewalk crack, I will break my mother's back." or "When It's Christmas and the weather is warm, it will be cold at Easter."
Those are superstitions. Astrology is not superstition. Not even close. Astrology is a language. It exists. Like Estonian or French. It just plain exists. Like hard boiled eggs or chutney. Now, for some, languages that they do not know and are unable to read or converse in, constitute a sort of threat. When we hear friends chatting in a language that we don't know and we are present, we almost automatically imagine that they are talking about us. This is a kind of natural paranoia. We cannot understand. So we feel threatened or left out and perhaps even targeted as a victim.
Astrology, like any language, does have to be learned in order to be used. That's why some people are astrologers and others have other learnèd professions such as doctors. An astrologer might tell you that your Sun in Leo means that you tend to want to be in the spotlight, but if your rising sign is Pisces, that Leo need for the spotlight might be mitigated.
This sort of "diagnosis" is not unsimilar to when a Dr tells you that the lump on your arm looks like a cyst, but if the tests come out positive, it might be something more serious. He looks at the cystic physical evidence, but he also digs further to find out if it might be something more threatening.
Now the language of Astrology has been much squelched and derided by a sector of the population we refer to as "scientists" or , in any case, people who believe that science (another language) is the pathway to understanding every human ill - including mental, emotional and physical ailments - and to conquering and refining and owning whatever commodity is available to man. (Space flight for example or improved hard boiled eggs)
But squelching a language doesn't always put it out of existence. And Astrology has survived the giant squelch of science and remains a means of communication between peoples and a method of both diagnosing and better understanding the human condition. Astrology is not in competition with science. It's just there alongside it the way that TV is there alongside the Internet. The two media must co-exist. They cannot afford to be at war. The Internet will win. It's bigger. And younger. TV knows that the way that Astrology knows that it must coexist with science because if there was a war between them Science would win. It's bigger. And younger.
Nonetheless, there is wisdom in what is ancient. So Astrology continues to exist. Some people study it and are able to use it in their work and daily lives. Other people don't study it sufficiently to become astrologers. But they dabble and they enjoy dabbling. Other people (most people) consult astrologers. They are the clients or the patients or the consultees who come to people like me for advice and information about their astrological charts: Who am I? What should I do about my mother-in-law's interfering in my marriage? How can I get a divorce and keep my children? Why do I not have self-confidence? Where am I making my mistakes and why do I keep making them over and over again?
What some skeptical people (the Science-blinded or prejudiced) don't know is that the answers to all of those questions are sitting right there in peoples' astrological charts. Moreover, just because most people don't know how to read their charts and don't speak the language or know how to interpret the letters (symbols), doesn't mean the answers are not there. They are.
Astrology never lies. I have heard it tell me and my clients the truth over and over and over again, thousands of times. A client writes and asks me why she cannot seem to get a husband. She's young and beautiful and accomplished and owns her own home. Yet, she has nobody to share it with. What should she do?
I find out her birth date, time and place (sometimes she sends me a photo as well) and I do her chart. First thing I note is that she is more accomplished than she let on in her query letter. I know already that she is president of her own company. But she is also an Aries with Leo rising and she was born in a Rooster year. This woman is what my mother used to call "a tough cookie" and a multitalented cookie at that!
She doesn't bend easily. She is not soulful and won't listen to whining - even her own. She wants to be in the spotlight (Leo rising) and she is indeed in her own spotlight all the time. She's also a Rooster which is one of the most successfully non-flexible signs out there. Rigidity lurks in this woman's chart and has already done some damage to her private life.
But... I look further and...Eureka! This young woman has the Moon in Cancer. She is longing for a home and children and a man to share it with. But, because the Aries and the Rooster and the Leo ganged up and got a hold on her soul (Moon) when she was still very young, she followed them to her own multimillion dollar successful oblivion. She learned how NOT to share and she made her fortune by being ruthless and firm in her opinions. (Aries/Rooster w Leo rising)
It's gets better. I dig a bit deeper and what do I find? This woman has Venus in Scorpio!
NB: I know. I know. You just don't get it when we tell you that there's a planet in some sign or other about which you know less than zero. Why? Because we are speaking to you in a language which is foreign to you. And this time it is about YOU. But we are not trying to hide anyting. You can learn the language too. Nobody is stopping you.
So our young woman has Venus in Scorpio. This means for some astrologers( We are not all alike. Just like doctors... Get a second opinion) that she equates love with sex and mystery and passion. She is hunting for passion and she is only finding suits and ties and expensive trappings. Why?
Because here she is, the president of a thriving software company, owner of her own 3000 sq ft. house and two luxury cars, 35 years old and beautiful and she cannot find a husband - someone to love and be loved by and make a family and a life with.
So?
She's too strong by half. And she is moreover "attracted" to the wrong kind of suitor. She has always thought she needed "someone like me." A mensch. A boss person. A leader of men (and women). Balderdash! Two bosses in the same household? Ouch.
She needs either a steadying, long-suffering Ox or a lovely, langourous Snake or even a tempestuous Tiger - born in Gemini or Leo or perhaps Sagittarius because she has Mercury (her communication planet) in Sagittarius. And those guys she should be looking for are not necessarily world beaters. They might be teachers or poets or musicians or even weedy scientists who leave their brains in the laboratories when they come home at night. They should not be head honchos. She is the head honcho. She needs soul. So she should find someone with extra soul to share.
Need I say more? Astrology simply never lies!

Astrology – a Scientific Outlook
From time immemorial, the concept that celestial bodies in the sky can provide a map of the future has fascinated mankind. Mankind’s romance with Astrology ranges from a casual glance at the newspaper’s zodiac signs section, to making important decisions in life such as matrimonial, financial and even medical on the advice of astrologers. It is known that some heads of state too have consulted astrologers to help make decisions that could influence the course of history.
So what is the accuracy of Astrology when used as a tool to predict the future or for decision making? Spiritual Science Research Foundation (SSRF) has used spiritual research methodologies to assist in shedding light on this question along with providing a spiritual perspective to the accuracy of Astrology and the parameters that could affect it.
1. Astrology as a science
Astrology has been confirmed and reconfirmed based on observation, inference and conclusion just like modern sciences. However the use of intuition in the science of Astrology is only possible if the astrologer is of a high spiritual level.
2. Accuracy of Astrology
Maximum amount of accuracy that can be obtained on average in the below four applications of Astrology:
• Predictive – 30%
• Diagnostic – 27%
• Basic human nature and compatibility between people – 27%
• Decision-making – 5%

3. Factors influencing accuracy of Astrology
3.1. Depending on tradition of Astrology used
There are various traditions used in Astrology. Each of them has varying methodologies. The following table (to view the table please click on the link at the end of the article and go to point 5.5.1) is a comparative chart of the accuracy able to be achieved by the more significant traditions obtained through spiritual research.

Depending on the spiritual level of an astrologer results can vary in accuracy. So what is the accuracy of Astrology when used as a tool to predict the future or for decision making? Spiritual Science Research Foundation (SSRF) has used spiritual research methodologies to assist in shedding light on this question along with providing a spiritual perspective to the accuracy of Astrology and the parameters that could affect it.
1. Astrology as a science
Astrology has been confirmed and reconfirmed based on observation, inference and conclusion just like modern sciences. However the use of intuition in the science of Astrology is only possible if the astrologer is of a high spiritual level.

Astrology v Science
When the great Julius Caesar entered his palace on the fateful day of his murder by his own beloved friend, he had ignored the warning of the cobbler, "Beware the Ides of March "
The sage Mihira predicted that King Vikramaditya's son would be killed by a pariah (pig) at the age of eighteen, so accurately that he was then after called Varahamihira.
We have numerous instances where predictions of seers, sages and astrologers have come true. There are various methods of prediction. Here are some.
1.Inspired predictions: Some persons invoke (or, are possessed by) Divine Souls and offer predictions. They employ certain 'mantras' which when chanted with reverence as prescribed in the scriptures, help them to invoke the spirits. But they do not remember the predictions once the spirits leave them.
2.Intuitions: Every man is endowed with this power. It will simply strike in your mind that something is going to happen and it will!
3. Dreams: It is a common experience of all of us that we dream events of the past and the future.
4.Omens: Belief in the omens is widespread in most countries.
5.Numerology: Numbers represent planets. Predictions are offered based on the date of birth etc
There is also a technique called" Astro Numerology" which employs not only numbers but also the positions of planets.
Some fore-tellers also use playing cards, marbles etc.
6.Palmistry: The palm of a man is said to reveal his future. Lord Christ has said in the Bible, "And God made marks upon the hands of man that he may know".
7.Physiognomy: There is also a system of prediction, which is based on the physical characteristics of a person.
8.Astrology: It is the most popular method of prediction, based on the horoscope cast for the moment of birth or enquiry.

ASTROLOGY vs SCIENCE
From time immemorial, man has been observing the objects of the sky and correlating their movement to the events in his life. Great men, Philosophers and sages have asserted their belief in astrology. But there is a lobby in some quarters that astrology has no scientific basis. According to them, it is superstition to believe that the planets have any say in human activities.
What is science? According to "Encyclopedia Americana" , it is "a systematized positive knowledge". Our sages and seers have observed the movement of celestial bodies, and with their knowledge, wisdom and inspiration put forward many theories proved "positive" by experience. It has become a fancy for some to scorn astrology as superstition. These men include scientists, rationalists and politicians. Those in power secretly consult astrologers for their personal and political fortunes but do not have the courage to include the subject in the curriculum. In ancient times great astrologers adorned the royal courts and the kings consulted them on all matters. We have instances where our sages had offered astounding predictions. Belief in astrology is a part of our culture.
Let us discuss the reservations of scientists for not recognizing astrology as an exact science.
KNOWLEDGE IS TRANSFERABLE
A scientist is able to split water into two gases namely oxygen and hydrogen. He can teach the technique to anybody, and the latter can obtain the two gases from the given quantity of water. Suppose an astrologer says by studying a horoscope that the native would marry an educated girl, he should be able to tell us what combination of planets made him come to that conclusion. And anybody who knows that particular combination should make the same inference in any chart. But, the astrologer miserably fails to transfer his knowledge and escapes by saying that 'intuition' also plays a vital role in predicting events. Unfortunately, astrology lacks clear-cut theories, which help us make definite inferences.
TEST OF PROBABILITY
Modern Science, like Chemistry or Physics, is based on theories, which stand the test of probability. Imagine that you toss a coin. The Probability that you get a head is 50%. It may vary from 40% to 60% by mere chance. But only an event with 70% probability is considered a significant event by Scientists. They accept that some factor is influencing the event. If 100 persons suffering from throat cancer are examined and at least 70 are found to be smokers, then we can conclude that smoking causes the disease. "Are the dictums of astrology universally true?" Let us take the statement - "Persons born with the Moon in Aries are short-tempered". To know the truth of this statement, we have to study 100 persons having the luminary in Aries at the time of birth. If at least 70 of them are short-tempered, then we can make confident predictions.
FREE WILL
Another argument against astrology is that man has a free will. He can plan, endeavor and achieve his ends. Success depends on his will power, self-confidence hard work and knowledge. There are two schools of thought. According to Dr.B.V.Raman, the eminent astrologer, "Planets impel us, but they do not compel". Knowledge of astrology helps us know in advance any impending danger. We can resist, modify or even overcome the impulsions of the planets. But, there are others, like the elite astrologer late professor K.S.Krishnamoorthy, who say that fate is inevitable. Man has a free will but how freely he can exercise his will is already destined. You know the rules of the road and are an able driver. But if the other man comes on the wrong way and dashes against you, it is fate! According to the Karma theory of Hinduism, man's life in this birth is the result of his past deeds in the previous birth. Unless the scientific basis of astrology is established, we cannot know the truth.
RELIGION AND ATHEISM
Astrology has long been associated with religion. The religious colour has kept the elite of the society away from the subject. While rationalists tar the image of astrology, quakes and clairvoyants exploit the public. There has been neither a serious study nor research. It is not an exaggeration if one says that the veterans, who held the field of Indian Astrology for the past few decades, did not encourage new findings. Krishnamurthy System based on the constellation and sub- theories is scientific and has been found very accurate in experience by many astrologers. But these theories have found a place only recently in the astrological arena.
VEXED QUESTIONS
There is a lot of disputes among astrologers regarding Ayanamsa and house system. This is also a reason why the subject remains unattractive. “Which is the correct time of birth?", "Which ayanamsa is correct?", "Is the cusp the beginning or the midpoint of a house?" are some of the vexed questions hitherto unanswered. For a beginner, the theories are too many to comprehend and apply.
It is high time that astrologers not only quote the old books but also do their own research and publish their findings.
MY RESEARCH
I took interest in astrology sometime in the early seventies. For quite sometime I had been testing the dictums of Vedic and Western astrology with actual events in the lives of my relatives and friends. The post mortem revealed that the theories were not universally applicable. I started my own research with the profession of a person as the subject. My aim was to find out whether any particular combination existed in the horoscopes of persons engaged in any particular profession. I collected the birth particulars of a number of bank employees and teachers. I cast their horoscopes accurately and tested the various theories.
DISCOVERY ABOUT ASPECTS
By God's grace a great discovery was made by me. I found that whenever the Moon signified the X house, the house of profession, it was invariably in aspect by the planet indicating the profession, Jupiter in the case of bank employees and Mercury in the case of teachers. Sometimes the aspects were harmonious and other times adverse. I tried to know how an adverse aspect could bring the native to the profession he was engaged in. The fact was that the aspects were not actually good or bad and the result depended on the aspecting planet and the aspected planet. So I termed the aspects (Western) as positive or negative.
SIGNIFICATION OF HOUSES BY PLANETS
Later I made another discovery more interesting than the previous one. Planets gain polarity by ruling or occupying a house.
AYANAMSA
There are a number of ‘panchangs’ in vogue owing to the different ayanamsas followed by different authors. This has resulted in lot of confusion as the ‘nakshatras’, ‘thithis’ etc differ on any particular day. The horoscopes cast by different followers are different, for one and the same person.
HOUSE DIVISION
There are various systems of house-division. The cusp of a house is taken as the beginning by westerners whereas Vedic astrologers take it as the midpoint.
TWIN BIRTHS
Children born with a few minutes’ difference have different characteristics. Sometimes one survives and the other dies though they have the same Rasi and Navamsa charts.
RECTIFICATION OF BIRTH TIME
Which is the actual time of birth? Even the sages have different opinions. One says that we have to take the cutting of the umbilical chord; another asks us to take the first cry of the baby and yet another advocates the method of pre-natal epoch. Again there are numerous ways of rectifying unknown birth times.

Astrology Birth Chart
